So, I would hope that most of us are used to testing normal DC motors, as we have seen them for our entire career. two wires, power and ground...maybe a bit more involved when you add in units like FPCM, etc, but they are still in essence a 2-wire DC motor.
Well, some of you may not be aware that in recent years, the automotive industry has been using a different type of motor for Fuel pumps, electric water pumps, blower motors, and other applications. So, contrary to what some people think, the 3 Phase motor is not simply for high voltage applications like EV. And testing them is NOT like a 2 wire motor. trust me, we have seen the destruction.
This unit is designed for testing 12v DC 3 phase motors. You simply run your power and ground leads from a power source to the input jacks, then run 3 leads from the output jacks to the corresponding connections at the harness or the motor connector. (Wiring Diagrams!) At that point, you press the power switch to turn the box on, and then control the motor speed with the knob. Of course you can also piggy back into your jumpers for scope captures or use amp clamps etc. The unit is small, affordable, and has had incredible feedback from technicians who used it. As I always try to tell guys, keep it simple. Use things that work well, and get to the root cause of the problem. Don't change expensive 3 phase motors when it is a harness or controller issue. Rule out the harness and motor quickly with this unit.
Units are all made with a cooling fan to keep them cool. Keep in mind that these units are not designed to continuously run these motors, even if they can. They are designed to test them and then perform the needed repair. They do have thermal shutdown safety built in, so IF overheated, the unit will not output properly until it cools down.
There are two options available, although the 15 amp version should be all you need in most applications. The 30 amp is available due to a request, so I will continue to offer it.
*** Please note that I am not responsible for anyone using this tester improperly.. i.e. powering a fuel pump inside a tank, can be dangerous, no matter the design of the pump circuits. I do not recommend doing this unless you have already tested the circuits for any possible short circuits or potential risk of fire/explosion. Please be safe in all of your testing routines, no matter what equipment you use!***
